Nah, we don’t need Healthcare Reform. Insurance is fine just the way it is.

Ten years ago, Chrissy Steltz lost her eyes, nose, and part of her face when another teenager fired a shotgun from five feet away.

She has been denied prosthetic surgery because the Oregon Health Plan considered the procedure “cosmetic”, but thanks to her doctor and some charitable friends, she’ll soon have a new face.

Her injuries haven’t stopped her from living: she’s been teaching blind children life skills.

“Life is what you make it,” she said.

And now she and her partner, Jeffrey, who’s also blind, are raising their 2-month-old baby boy, which leaves no time for self-pity.

“Just because you have a tragic thing happen in your life, it doesn’t mean that your life is over,” she said.

so inspiring & unfortunate all at the same time.
we need reform, something awful bad, I just hope they go about it so that it actually WORKS, and works FOR the people.

The only people that don’t want the system changed are in a financial position where they don’t need to utilise it, and haven’t had to watch a loved one go through it.

Wow…and here I am somehow self-pitying myself everyday..

This is one of the MANY reasons we need insurance reform NOW! That woman is so strong to have gone through life for so long in that condition and still have such a hunger for life! Bravo to her, she’s a true inspiration!! Great and horrible article all at the same time… I hate insurance companies. My mother was denied an electric wheelchair 3 times while in a nursing home after losing one of her legs, the other leg was unable to be used for anything, her right hand was permanently crippled and all she could use to wheel herself around was her left hand- but they said it wasn’t a medical necessity…

  6. MONROE G. ST SAVAGE Says:

WHAT IS THE NAME OF CHRISSY’S INSURANCE COMPANY? EVERYONE OUT THERE SHOULD PASS THE WORD AROUND ABOUT HOW BADLY THEY TREATED HER. IT WOULD BE GREAT TO BANKRUPT THEM FOR THEIR ASTONISHING GREED AND STUPIDITY.

  7. MorrigainMillimeter Says:

I second that motion, Monroe. This woman obviously has an imdomnitable spirit and the strength of steel, and I can’t imagine it’s been easy for her husband to have his wife go through this and not be able to help her. This sheer bigotry and idiocy of the tight-fisted nightmare-bureaucracy monsters who appear to be in control of the insurance companies now need to learn that, contrary to their current they are NOT in existence to keep their money. They are SUPPOSED to be giving people the financial help they need to get out of situations like this (well, at least in theory)! Assholes.

News flash, bureaucrats: this is no longer your call.
