Acoustic Levitation Integral to Mars Missions

Posted by Danger on January 21st, 2010 filed in It's Science

One of the more daunting challenges of sending missions to Mars is the problem of dust. Due to the atmosphere and lack of displacing elements, the dust can be a menace to all forms of human operation.

With challenges come great solutions, though; scientists are zeroing in on controlling the particles with acoustic levitation, as shown above.

wait, i don’t really understand how this works. O_O do they use sound?

if its to do with dust, and soundwaves vibrate through the air it does kinda make sense, maybe its the vibrations that kinda “pick up” or shunt along the dust particles. Kinda like a really noisy hoover that you don’t have to push around yourself
